Memorial Healthcare in Owosso adds general surgeon Gavin Ambrosi
The hospital said Thursday that Dr. Gavin Ambrosi, a board-certified general surgeon who most recently ran a trauma program in northern Wisconsin, has joined Memorial Healthcare Surgical Associates and is taking new patients.
Shiawassee County has another surgeon taking appointments. Memorial Healthcare announced Thursday that Dr. Gavin Ambrosi has joined its active medical staff and Memorial Healthcare Surgical Associates in Owosso, and that he is accepting new patients with most insurances.
Ambrosi is a board-certified general surgeon with more than six years of surgical experience, the hospital said. The list of what he handles is broad: robotic surgery, colorectal surgery, hernia repair, anti-reflux procedures, breast surgery, skin cancer surgery, dialysis access and arteriovenous fistula procedures, and EGD and colonoscopy. For patients here, that last pair matters as much as any of it — those are the routine scope procedures people otherwise drive out of the county for.
A Michigan native, Ambrosi earned his medical degree at Michigan State University and completed his general surgery residency at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, according to the announcement. He came to Owosso from Marshfield Medical Center in Minocqua, Wisconsin, where he served as trauma medical director.
The hospital also said Ambrosi has co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has worked as a reviewer for several medical journals.
The hire continues a steady run of staffing announcements out of 826 W. King St. The Current reported in August that Ali Al-Waili, MD, had joined Memorial Healthcare Family/Internal Medicine, and that psychologist Valerie Hooper, Psy.D., had joined Memorial Healthcare Counseling Services, both accepting new patients.
What the announcement does not say is where Ambrosi will see patients day to day, when he started, or whether he fills a vacancy on the surgical staff. Memorial Healthcare Surgical Associates is one of the health system's affiliated physician practices, and the hospital directed prospective patients to its main line, (989) 720-2273.
What happens next: Patients who want an appointment can call the hospital's main number or use the request form on Memorial Healthcare's website. The Current has asked the hospital for the practice's office location and Ambrosi's start date.
