Memorial Healthcare in Owosso wins ZERO Prostate Cancer grant
The Owosso hospital said the one-year grant will fund prostate cancer education, outreach and help connecting people to screening and follow-up care.
Memorial Healthcare in Owosso has been awarded a grant from ZERO Prostate Cancer, the hospital announced in a July 6 news release.
ZERO Prostate Cancer is a national nonprofit that works on prostate cancer advocacy, awareness, education and support, according to the release. The hospital said the grant will support efforts to increase access to prostate cancer education and community resources and to connect people with screening opportunities and follow-up care.
The money will be used over a one-year grant period to expand local outreach and improve access to prostate cancer services, the release said. The hospital did not state a dollar amount.
"We are grateful to ZERO Prostate Cancer for investing in the health of the communities we serve," said Abbie Majzel, chief administrative officer at Memorial Health System, in the release. "This grant will help us continue our commitment to providing education, increasing awareness, and connecting individuals with the resources they need to make informed decisions about their health."
The release said prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men and that early detection plays an important role in improving outcomes. Through the partnership, the hospital said it will continue promoting awareness and supporting community members in getting preventive care and health resources.
Memorial Healthcare describes itself as an independent, community non-profit hospital with 165 beds, a medical staff of more than 500 physicians and advanced practice providers, and more than 1,800 employees. It is the sole hospital in Shiawassee County, serving a population of roughly 68,000, with an expanded footprint in Bay, Clinton, Genesee, Ingham, Livingston and Saginaw counties. The hospital opened in 1921.
ZERO Prostate Cancer was founded in 1996 as the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, according to the release.

The grant runs for one year, and the hospital said funding will go toward local outreach and access to prostate cancer services during that period. Memorial Healthcare directed people seeking information about its cancer services to MemorialHealthcare.org.
