People in Owosso who live with chronic headaches have another specialist to call. Memorial Healthcare announced Thursday that Chelsea Lee, DNP, AGNP-C, has joined its active medical staff at the Institute for Neuroscience and is accepting new patients with most insurances.

Lee is an adult-gerontology nurse practitioner, and the hospital says her focus is evaluating and treating primary and secondary headache disorders. That includes procedures as well as office visits: Memorial says she offers occipital nerve blocks and botulinum toxin Type A — Botox — for headache management, and that she holds credentialing in advanced headache procedures. For a patient whose migraines have outrun over-the-counter medicine, those are the treatments that usually come next.

She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Michigan State University. Before becoming a nurse practitioner she worked years at the bedside in post-surgical, orthopedic, neurology and trauma care, according to the announcement. Memorial also says she has taught as a clinical instructor at Lansing Community College, served as a preceptor for other nurses, had an abstract accepted by the American Academy of Neurology and received multiple DAISY Award nominations for patient care.

This is the second hire Memorial has announced for the Institute for Neuroscience since summer. The Current reported in August that Nasima Omar, PA-C, joined the same institute and would see patients in Owosso and Okemos. The institute also has a presence in Howell, where Memorial named a medical assistant its July employee of the month.

The announcement does not say which of those offices Lee will work from, when she started, or whether she fills a vacancy. It also gives no direct scheduling line for the neuroscience practice — the only number in the release is Memorial's main guest services line, (989) 720-CARE (2273). The hospital's main address is 826 W. King St. in Owosso.

What happens next: Memorial says Lee is accepting new patients now. We have asked the system before for direct scheduling numbers for individual practices without getting one, and that remains an open thread on this beat; we will add her office location and a scheduling number when Memorial provides them.
