Perry school board is the county's only meeting this week; 25 games

Government business in Shiawassee County all but stops this week. The only public board meeting on the verified calendar is Perry Schools on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The Owosso Public Library board meets Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the library, and that is the list.

That is a sharp drop from last week. The Current reported on Sept. 20 that Owosso, Corunna, Durand, New Lothrop and Ovid-Elsie all had boards in session on the same Monday night. Several of those meetings left questions behind that are still open: Corunna's per-parcel cost for its fire special assessment was left out of the council packet, the Durand City Council's Amtrak depot lease outcome has not been reported, and New Lothrop's 2025-26 audit findings and the winning bid for baseball field drainage are unreported. The desk is still chasing all three.

Twenty-five games, and no football on the verified schedules

Sports carry the week. Twenty-five county school games are on the verified schedules between Monday and Thursday — eight Monday, eight Tuesday, three Wednesday and six Thursday, all volleyball and soccer. No football games appear on the schedules the desk verified for this week, including Friday, Oct. 2.

Monday's slate: Corunna at Goodrich and Brandon at Owosso in volleyball, Genesee Christian at Byron and Carman-Ainsworth at Laingsburg in volleyball, and soccer with Brandon at Corunna, Lake Fenton at Owosso, Ithaca at Perry and Ovid-Elsie at Mason. Tuesday brings Chesaning at Ovid-Elsie, Lakeville at Durand, Perry at Laingsburg and Ovid-Elsie at Birch Run in soccer, plus Chesaning at New Lothrop, Durand at Birch Run, Ovid-Elsie at Montrose and Perry at Laingsburg in volleyball.

Wednesday is short — Clio at Corunna volleyball, Owosso at Lake Fenton volleyball, Owosso at Goodrich soccer. Thursday closes with St. Johns at Ovid-Elsie and Chesaning at St. Charles and Brandon at Byron in volleyball, and Laingsburg at Dansville, Genesee Christian at Laingsburg and Lansing Christian at Perry in soccer.

What we still do not have is the part parents ask for first. The desk has no confirmed finals for the eight-game county football slate of Friday, Sept. 25, no confirmed result from Byron's Aug. 28 opener against Mesick, and therefore no verified county-wide records or standings heading into Week 6. Kickoff times for that Sept. 25 slate were missing from the verified schedules as well; that request has been open with schools and athletic departments since Sept. 24. We will publish a records table when the schools confirm the scores, and not before.

Around the county

The 65th Annual Golf Classic tees off at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Owosso Country Club; the calendar listing does not name a beneficiary or give an entry fee. Thursday has two fundraiser-style listings: Fall Purse Party Bingo at 6 p.m. at 1259 E. M-21 in Owosso, and a Pink Party at 9 a.m. at Captain's Club Golf & Event Center in Grand Blanc.

At the senior centers, the SCOA Morrice Center has a Matter of Balance class at 2 p.m. and a birthday party at 4 p.m. Monday, and a Hunger & Homelessness community resources session at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Watercolor painting runs at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the SCOA Durand Center, and the SCOA Owosso Center hosts a Disability Network cooking class at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday — RSVP required. The Children's Library at Owosso Public Library runs Paper Squishies at 9 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and Storytime with Miss Natalie at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; Durand Memorial Library has Play and Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
