New Lothrop at Chesaning tops nine county football games this weekend
Eight county teams play Friday night and Morrice travels to Hillman on Saturday, while libraries in Owosso and Durand run Halloween crafts and a Winnie the Pooh birthday party.
Nine Shiawassee County football teams are on the road or at home this weekend, and the one that keeps the county in the stands is New Lothrop at Chesaning on Friday night. Everything else Friday sends our teams out of the county: Byron at Merritt Academy, Ortonville Brandon at Owosso, Corunna at Goodrich, Durand at Birch Run, Perry at Laingsburg and Ovid-Elsie at Montrose. Morrice plays Saturday at Hillman. Durand's soccer team is at Genesee Christian on Friday.
The verified schedules the desk works from list the matchups but not the kickoff times, which has been the pattern all season. That gap is an open request with the schools and athletic departments, and so are the final scores: as The Current reported, the desk still has no confirmed results from several county football nights, including Byron's Aug. 28 opener. If you are watching from home, the live scoreboard is at /scoreboard/.
Friday
The Children's Library at Owosso Public Library starts early, with Model Magic seed decorations at 9 a.m. and Storytime with Miss Natalie at 10:30 a.m. In Durand, the Durand Memorial Library runs Halloween Craft Days for All Ages at 2 p.m. — the calendar says all ages, not just kids.
The Shiawassee Council on Aging has two Friday afternoon items worth passing along to a parent or grandparent. Free hearing checks start at 2 p.m. at the SCOA Durand Center, and a fall prevention presentation starts at 2:30 p.m. at the SCOA Owosso Center.
Saturday
The Downtown Owosso Farmers Market opens at 9 a.m. An hour later, the Children's Library at Owosso Public Library holds a Winnie the Pooh birthday celebration at 10 a.m., and Durand Memorial Library runs its second day of Halloween Craft Days at 10 a.m.
At 3 p.m., the SCOA Morrice Center has a bake sale listed on the calendar at the Sunoco in Perry. The listing does not say what the proceeds go toward, and the desk has asked.
What happens next
Friday's games are the last county-wide football slate before the regular season winds down, and finals should be in by late Friday night. We post them to /scoreboard/ as schools confirm them. If your group has something on the calendar we missed — a bake sale, a craft night, a fundraiser — send it to [email protected] and we will verify and list it.
