Durand school board takes two donations Monday, three weeks before bond vote
The Oct. 12 agenda lists gifts to the high school art program and the athletic department, a first reading of board policies — and nothing about the district's $30.29 million November ballot question.
The Durand Area Schools board meets at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, with a short agenda: two donations to accept, a first reading of board policies, and the usual consent items for minutes and personnel.
Both donations are listed under votes and resolutions. One is described only as a "Durand High School Art Program Donation," the other as an "Athletic Department Donation." The posted agenda gives no donor name and no dollar figure for either, and carries no attached descriptions. That is a pattern on this board's agendas — The Current reported on the Sept. 14 meeting that a salary schedule and two FFA travel items were listed with no descriptions of any of them.
What is not on the agenda is the thing most Durand households have in front of them this month. The Current reported Sept. 2 that Durand Area Schools is asking voters for a $30.29 million building bond on the Nov. 3 ballot, one of 15 proposals the county clerk listed for that election. Monday's agenda includes no bond item. Any discussion of it would have to come up under the superintendent's report, principals' and directors' reports, board communication, or public comment — none of which are described in advance.
The board authorized the bond election at its Aug. 3 meeting, when the agenda also carried interim leadership for Bertha Neal Elementary and a slate of 2026-27 handbooks and course catalogs.
The first reading of board policies is listed under old/new business with no indication of which policies are being revised. A first reading is normally a review step, with adoption held for a later meeting.
Public comment is on the agenda ahead of the reports section.
What happens next: The board meets Monday at 7 p.m. After that, the agenda lists a Committee of the Whole meeting Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center and a regular meeting Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the same place — the first regular meeting after the Nov. 3 bond vote. The desk will be looking for the donation amounts and donors in the minutes, and for which policies got their first reading.
