Owosso school board meets Wednesday at Performing Arts Center

The Owosso Public Schools Board of Education holds its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Owosso Performing Arts Center, 765 E. North St. That is the same room the board uses for its regular monthly meetings.

The notice the district posted is a bare one. It gives the date, the hour, the location and the board's phone number, 989-723-8131, and it says board minutes are kept at the principal office of the Board of Education at 645 Alger St. It does not include an agenda, so what the board will actually take up Wednesday is not public in this document.

Several things the board has been working through are unresolved. The Current reported Sept. 10 that August board packets set the district's debt levy at 4.7 mills — unchanged — and called for the bonds approved by voters in August to be sold in roughly $12 million rounds, with a negotiated sale before Dec. 1. That deadline is now about 10 weeks out.

Also still open is the fate of the closed middle school. The Current reported in August that a developer, Venture, wants to convert the building into 53 affordable apartments but that its purchase agreement with the district was set to expire Aug. 1, and no extension vote appeared in the board's July packet.

At its Sept. 9 committee of the whole, the board looked at expanding public comment, sound at Willman Field and 2027 health insurance rates, and scheduled a closed session with attorneys. Whether any of those come back Wednesday as action items is not stated in the notice.

What happens next: the meeting is open to the public and starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Performing Arts Center. The Current has asked the district for the agenda and packet and will report what the board votes on.
