Perry at Laingsburg, New Lothrop at Chesaning: 8 county games tonight
Two in-county matchups headline a Friday slate of seven football games and a soccer match, with New Lothrop arriving in Chesaning at 5-1.
Eight county teams play tonight, and two of the games are neighbors. New Lothrop, 5-1 in games we have logged, plays at Chesaning (3-2) at 7 p.m. Perry (3-3) travels to Laingsburg (1-4), also at 7 p.m.
The Perry trip has been on the calendar since summer. When we published Laingsburg's verified nine-game schedule on Aug. 10, the Oct. 9 meeting with Perry was the Wolfpack's one in-county date of the season.
The rest of the 7 p.m. football slate: Ortonville Brandon at Owosso (2-3), Corunna (2-2) at Goodrich, Durand (2-3) at Birch Run and Ovid-Elsie (3-3) at Montrose. Owosso and Corunna both come in off last week's county meeting, which Corunna won 28-7.
Two teams start early. Byron (1-3) plays at Merritt Academy at 4:30 p.m., and Durand's soccer team is at Genesee Christian at 4:30 p.m. — meaning Durand is on the road twice tonight, soccer first and football at Birch Run at 7.
A caution on every record above: they are computed from the games we have actually logged, not from official school figures. Seven of the eight county football finals from Friday, Oct. 2 have still not come back from the schools — Owosso at Goodrich, Chesaning at Mt. Morris, Montrose at Durand, Saranac at Perry, Ovid-Elsie at New Lothrop, Bath at Laingsburg and Morrice at Coleman. Only Corunna's 53-50 loss at Lake Fenton was confirmed. Byron's Aug. 28 home opener against Mesick remains unconfirmed six weeks on, so the Eagles' mark is incomplete. No county athletic department has answered our request for official season records.
