Corunna loses 53-50 to Lake Fenton; 7 county finals still out
The only verified final from Friday, Oct. 2 in Shiawassee County was a three-point football game; seven other county games had no result at deadline.
Corunna lost a 103-point football game by three on Friday, Oct. 2, falling to Lake Fenton 53-50. It was the only county result our score desk had verified from that night.
Seven other county football games went into the weekend without a confirmed final. Owosso played at Goodrich, Chesaning at Mt. Morris, Montrose at Durand, Saranac at Perry, Ovid-Elsie at New Lothrop, Bath at Laingsburg and Morrice at Coleman. We log scores, not plays, and we do not publish a result until it is confirmed — so none of those seven appear here with a number next to them.
That is now a pattern worth naming. The Current reported on Sept. 30 that seven of the eight county football games played Friday, Sept. 25 — including Owosso at Corunna and Durand at Ovid-Elsie — still had no verified final. Finals from the eight-game county slates on Monday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Sept. 29, which included Chesaning at Ovid-Elsie soccer, the Perry-Laingsburg doubleheader and Chesaning at New Lothrop volleyball, have also not come back.
Byron High School still owes the score of its own home football opener against Mesick, played Aug. 28. That one has been outstanding for more than a month, and it leaves Byron's logged record incomplete.
The desk has formally asked county athletic departments to supply their official season records so we can reconcile them against our logged marks. No department has responded. Until they do, we will not print a team's won-loss record, because we cannot stand behind one.
For readers, the practical effect is simple: if your kid's team played Friday and you don't see a score, it is because nobody has confirmed it to us yet, not because we left it out.
What happens next
Finals come from the schools. As soon as the seven outstanding Oct. 2 games are confirmed, they go up on our live scoreboard at /scoreboard/, which updates through the night. Athletic directors and coaches with a verified final — including the September games still owed — can send it to the score desk.
