Owosso falls 48-20, Byron 48-28; six county finals still out

Two Shiawassee County football scores came back Friday night — both losses — while the six remaining games, including New Lothrop at Chesaning, had no final at deadline.

Two final scores came back from Friday night's county slate, and both went against the home county. Owosso lost 48-20 to Ortonville Brandon. Byron lost 48-28 to Merritt Academy in 8-player play.

Those were the only games our score desk could confirm by deadline. Six more were still unfinished or unreported when we published: New Lothrop at Chesaning and Perry at Laingsburg — the two in-county football meetings on the card — plus Corunna at Goodrich, Durand at Birch Run, Ovid-Elsie at Montrose, and the Durand soccer trip to Genesee Christian. We are not printing a score for any of those until a school or the scoreboard confirms one.

For Owosso, it is the second loss the desk has logged in as many weeks. The Current reported that Corunna beat the Trojans 28-7 in a county meeting the week before; we still have no date, site or scoring summary for that game, and we have asked for one.

Byron's result lands on an incomplete ledger. The Eagles opened the season at home against Mesick on Friday, Aug. 28, and six weeks later Byron High School has never confirmed that final. Until it does, the team's logged record cannot be stated accurately, so we are not stating one.

That is the broader problem with this week's board. Seven of the eight county football finals from Friday, Oct. 2 — Owosso at Goodrich, Chesaning at Mt. Morris, Montrose at Durand, Saranac at Perry, Ovid-Elsie at New Lothrop, Bath at Laingsburg and Morrice at Coleman — have still not come back from the schools. Only Corunna's 53-50 loss to Lake Fenton was confirmed. Add Friday's six open games and the county is now owed 13 football results, plus a soccer final.

We log scores, not plays. The dossier behind this roundup carries the two confirmed finals and nothing about how either game was played, so nothing here should be read as a judgment on either team's night.

What happens next: Scores update at the live county scoreboard through the night and into the weekend as schools report. Athletic directors who want a final in the record can send it to the score desk; we will run the six open games — and Byron's Aug. 28 opener — as soon as they are confirmed.
