Byron posts a Habitat for Humanity notice — but not the details

The village's Oct. 13 item under Village News carries only the headline in its text, with no build address, work dates or way to sign up.

The Village of Byron put a post titled "Habitat For Humanity" on its news page on Oct. 13. That is nearly all the village said in writing. The post's text carries the title, the date and the category — Village News — and nothing else: no address, no family name, no work days, no volunteer sign-up, no donation drop-off.

Habitat for Humanity is the national nonprofit that builds and repairs houses using volunteer labor alongside the families who will live in them, and that runs ReStore resale outlets to help pay for the work. What form it is taking in Byron — a build, a repair, a fundraiser, a call for volunteers — the village's post does not say in any text we can read. Whatever details exist appear to be in an image or flyer that does not come through as words.

That is the same gap we ran into in Morrice last week, where the village asked for Halloween donations through a flyer that likewise held all its particulars in a picture. Our story there is still waiting on the basics: what is needed, where it goes, and by when. A notice that can't be read is a notice that can't be acted on, and for a Habitat project the details are the whole point — the hours, the street, the skills needed, the place to hand over money or a hammer.

If you want to ask the village directly, the office is at 146 S Saginaw St in Byron, the email is [email protected] and the phone number is (810) 266-5090. The same news page has recently carried posts on early voting, recycling information and a public notice; the village lists 22 items under Village News and 24 under Public Notices.

What happens next: The Current will ask the Village of Byron for the contents of the Habitat for Humanity post — whose house, where, which dates volunteers are wanted and how neighbors can donate — and will publish them when we have them. If you have the flyer, send it to us and we'll run the particulars.
