Ovid-Elsie audit got a 41-minute review by one committee member
Minutes show only Chair Mary Thompson attended the Oct. 14 Ovid-Elsie finance committee meeting that reviewed the district's 2025-26 audit before Monday's board vote.
The Ovid-Elsie Area Schools board committee that reviewed the district's 2025-26 financial audit before it went to the full board did so with one of its three members in the room.
Minutes posted by the district show the Board of Education Finance Committee met at 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Administration Office, with Chair Mary Thompson present and members Josh Miller and David Huff absent. Mark Horak and Kaite Kusnier also attended. The meeting adjourned at 6:13 p.m. — 41 minutes.
The one substantive item was the audit. The minutes say the committee "Reviewed the audit prepared by Yeo and Yeo that will be presented at the Regular Board of Education Meeting on Monday, October 19, 2026." They record no findings, no fund balance figure and no discussion of either. An audit is the outside accountant's examination of a district's books and the single clearest public statement of how a school district's finances stand.
Under "Other Matters," the minutes say the committee "Discussed revenue potentials for the current school year," with no further detail. No members of the public spoke and no written correspondence was received.
The timing matters because of what else the district is carrying. The Current reported in August that the board split 4-3 in July on an application to the state's School Bond Qualification and Loan Program, and that its facilities committee spent the summer interviewing architects and construction management firms as Ovid-Elsie moves toward a bond proposal. The 2025-26 audit is the financial baseline a district takes to voters in that kind of campaign.
Monday's regular board meeting also carried a reconsideration of a censure resolution and a vote on whether to release an Oct. 6 letter from Thrun Law, neither of which the posted agenda explained. The Current reported on Oct. 16 that the board had not disclosed who the censure concerns or what the attorney letter is about.
What happens next: The Yeo & Yeo audit was scheduled for presentation and a roll-call approval vote at the Oct. 19 regular meeting. The district has not yet posted minutes from that meeting. We are seeking the audit report itself, the district's fund balance, and the outcome of Monday's votes on the censure and the Thrun Law letter.
