$500 spectator drag race opens Owosso Speedway's Oct. 3 card in Ovid
The Ovid track has posted a minute-by-minute schedule for Maximum "O"verload, the destruction show moved off Sept. 19 — buses, trailers, a flag pole race and a closing stunt.
Owosso Speedway has finally put times and classes to its destruction show. The track posted a run-of-show Tuesday for Maximum "O"verload on Saturday, Oct. 3, at its M-21 grounds in Ovid, starting with a spectator drag race worth $500 to the winner at 6 p.m.
The pit gate opens at 2 p.m., with tech inspection from 2 to 4:30 p.m. General admission opens at 4 p.m. Cars take three safety laps between 4:30 and 5 p.m., the mandatory drivers meeting is at 5:15 p.m., spectator drag cars line up in the infield at 5:40 p.m. and opening ceremonies are at 5:50 p.m.
After the drag race, the card runs an eight-lap stacker race, an oval enduro scheduled for the number of cars entered plus five laps, then front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive flag pole races at eight laps each and an eight-lap trailer "park it" race. A 20-minute intermission with bus rides splits the show.
The back half is figure-8 racing, where the cars cross paths in the middle of the track: a 20-lap figure 8 enduro, a 12-lap trailer figure 8 and a 12-lap bus figure 8. The schedule closes with one line — "STUNT - THE END -" — and does not say what the stunt is.
This is the show that has moved around the calendar. The Current reported Aug. 28 that the track had Destruction "O"verload on its calendar for Sept. 19 with no class list, no start times and no ticket prices, and with page text describing a Sept. 16 open practice instead. On Sept. 16 the event page listed the show on Oct. 3 and called it a reschedule from a Sept. 19 rainout — a date that had not yet arrived. Tuesday's release is the first full program the track has published for it.
The release does not list ticket prices, pit pass prices or an entry fee, and it does not say whether spectator drag race entries are still open or how to sign up. The track's contact information is listed as Rex Wheeler, owner, at 7204 W. M-21 in Ovid, (989) 461-7223. The schedule was submitted by Jeff Parish.
What happens next: Gates open at 2 p.m. for the pits and 4 p.m. for the grandstand on Saturday, Oct. 3, with the first race at 6 p.m. The Current has asked the track for admission prices and entry details and will update when the track posts them.
