Durand 14, Corunna 13 in county football opener; 8 games still out

Durand beat Corunna 14-13 on Thursday night, the only final score confirmed by our score desk on the first night of the fall season. The one-point margin decided the county's marquee opener, a Corunna trip to Durand that The Current previewed earlier this month as one of three in-county games on the Cavaliers' verified eight-game schedule.

We logged scores, not plays. How the game turned on that single point is not something this desk can report from the scoreboard, and we are not going to guess.

Eight other county games kicked off or served Thursday, and none of them had a final in hand at deadline. In football, that includes Standish-Sterling at Chesaning, Tri County Area at Ovid-Elsie, Vandercook Lake at Laingsburg, Muskegon Catholic Central at New Lothrop, Perry at Addison and Morrice at Brown City.

Fall soccer and volleyball also opened. Potterville was at Perry and Durand was at Swartz Creek in soccer, and Potterville was at Byron for volleyball. No result was available for any of those three at deadline either.

All of Thursday's football openers were season openers, so no team in the county carries a record beyond this one night, and no standings exist yet. Ovid-Elsie, Laingsburg, New Lothrop and Morrice all opened on the dates listed in the verified schedules we published Aug. 10; Byron opens at home Friday against Mesick, and Owosso opens Friday at Pinckney.
