Shiawassee week ahead: six football games Thursday, two councils meet

The holiday weekend has pushed the county's football schedule off Friday night. All six Shiawassee County schools on this week's schedule play Thursday, Sept. 3: Perry at Detroit Osborn, Owosso at Flint Hamady, Fowlerville at Corunna, LakeVille Memorial at Chesaning, Durand at New Lothrop and Ovid-Elsie at Birch Run. Kickoff times are not listed on the verified schedules the desk works from, so check with the schools before you plan a drive to Detroit or Birch Run.

The week's public business lands Tuesday, Sept. 1, when both the Chesaning Village Council and the Laingsburg City Council meet. In Chesaning, the council was asked to approve $292,171.69 in bills, a figure the posted packet does not itemize, and to set this year's trick-or-treat hours. In Laingsburg, the council has a marijuana license renewal fee on the agenda " the dollar amount was left blank in the packet the city posted " along with rules for e-bikes. Those are the two items this desk will be watching for outcomes.

Two library items are worth putting on the calendar. September is Library Card Sign Up Month at Durand Memorial Library, starting Tuesday. Then on Saturday, Sept. 5, both Durand Memorial Library and the Owosso Public Library close for the Labor Day weekend. Labor Day falls Monday, Sept. 7.

Durand's library lawn is still busy Saturday even with the building shut: the Friends of the Library hold a Cruisin' Saturday book sale on the lawn starting at 10 a.m. In Owosso, the Downtown Owosso Farmers Market opens at 9 a.m. at the downtown market site.

The Shiawassee County Council on Aging has a full week. A mobile Secretary of State office sets up at the SCOA Owosso Center at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31 " that is a driver's license and plate errand you can run without leaving town. A site committee meets at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the SCOA Morrice Center. Thursday brings a Matter of Balance class at 5 p.m. at the Owosso center, which requires registration, and an Ascension Living PACE education session at 4:30 p.m. at the SCOA Durand Center. Euchre is at 5 p.m. Saturday in Morrice.

Beyond football, the soccer and volleyball schedules fill in around the meetings. Monday: Laingsburg at Portland volleyball, Holly at Corunna soccer, Owosso at Swartz Creek soccer. Tuesday: Potterville at Laingsburg, Dansville at Perry and Ovid-Elsie at East Lansing in soccer, with Perry at Lansing Christian volleyball.

Wednesday is the heaviest night on the court. Ovid-Elsie hosts three volleyball opponents in one day " Freeland, Valley Lutheran and Powers Catholic " while Goodrich plays at Corunna, Owosso travels to Brandon and Pewamo-Westphalia visits Laingsburg. On the pitch Wednesday, Corunna is at Lake Fenton and Holly is at Owosso. Thursday's non-football games are Lake Fenton at New Lothrop volleyball, Chesaning at Durand volleyball, Durand at More Academy soccer and Owosso at Stockbridge soccer.
