Owosso library board is the week's only posted meeting; 3 games
The Oct. 26–Nov. 1 calendar is nearly empty of public business, with Halloween parties, a week of pumpkin crafts and three volleyball matches filling the days instead.
If you were planning to speak at a public meeting this week, there is almost nowhere to do it. The only board on the county calendar between Monday and Sunday is the Owosso Public Library Board, which meets Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the library.
That is a sharp drop from recent weeks. The Current reported last week on a county calendar carrying the Chesaning Village Council's $645,000 OHM contract, a Corunna parks plan hearing and an Owosso hearing on nuisance cleanup charges billed back to property owners. None of those outcomes have been reported yet, and this week's calendar adds nothing to replace them.
One item not on this dossier but still on the week: The Current reported that Owosso Township set a hearing on its battery storage ordinance for Wednesday, Oct. 28. That draft would confine battery energy storage to M-2 industrial zoning with a 300-foot setback.
The rest of the week belongs to Halloween. The Children's Library at the Owosso Public Library runs "Let's Make Pumpkin People" at 9 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Storytime with Miss Natalie is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and Durand Memorial Library has Play and Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Neither library's listing says whether you need to register.
For older residents, the Shiawassee Council on Aging's Morrice center has a birthday party at 4 p.m. Monday. The Owosso center has Estate & Legacy Planning at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, BINGO sponsored by Angel Hands at 12:30 p.m. Friday and a Halloween party at 2:30 p.m. Friday. The YMCA/SDL Book Club takes up "The Correspondent" at 10 a.m. Wednesday at an offsite location the calendar does not name. Durand Memorial Library closes the week with a Halloween Family Movie Night at 6 p.m. Friday in the main room.
Sports are down to three lines: Laingsburg at Stockbridge and New Lothrop at St. Charles in volleyball Tuesday, and Perry at Montrose Wednesday. No football is listed for county schools this week, and the dossier does not say why. If any of our teams have a playoff date, it is not on this calendar.
Halloween itself falls Saturday. In Bancroft, as we reported, trick-or-treat runs 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 and Warren Street closes for it.
What happens next: start times for the three volleyball matches, registration rules for the library programs and any county football playoff dates were not in the posted record as of Sunday, and this desk will add them as schools and districts post them. Live scores go up at /scoreboard/. If your organization has an event for next week's calendar, send it to [email protected].
