Durand, Perry school boards meet Monday; Chesaning council Tuesday

Three governing bodies meet in the open this week. The Durand school board and the Perry school board both sit Monday, and the Chesaning village council meets Tuesday. Those are the three rooms where county money and county policy get decided between now and next weekend.

Durand's board has the most on its plate that touches families directly. The Current reported that Monday's board vote covers a staff pay scale and FFA trip approvals. The Chesaning council's Tuesday meeting was set by the council itself on Sept. 1, when it amended its minutes and fixed Sept. 15 as the next date. Chesaning has several threads still hanging: the village is running a water rate study, it agreed to refund a $933 site-plan fee tied to 709 W. Broad St., and it has moved toward setting a hearing on abandoning part of Railroad Street. The tenant for 709 W. Broad still has not been named publicly.

One caution before you plan your evening: the verified dossier the desk works from lists the dates of all three meetings but not the start times or the rooms. Check the posted agenda for each board before you drive.

On the community side, the Owosso Public Library's Children's Library runs Model Magic Owls at 9 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and holds a Rick Riordan fan club night at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Riordan is the author of the Percy Jackson series; the calendar listing does not indicate the author himself is involved. In Durand, the Durand Memorial Library's Reading Room hosts a book discussion on "Our Favorite Summer Books" at 4 p.m. Monday, followed by the Friends of the Library meeting at 6 p.m., and Tales with Tails runs at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Children's Room.

The Shiawassee Council on Aging fills out the week. The SCOA Owosso Center has the Friendship Beyond Grief support group at 1 p.m. and the Alzheimer's support group at 3 p.m. Monday, and a Disability Network cooking session at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday that requires an RSVP. The SCOA Durand Center has the SMARTS art class at 10 a.m. Monday (RSVP required), 5 Crowns and euchre at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and an SCOA finance meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. A Matter of Balance class meets at 2 p.m. Monday at the SCOA Morrice Center.

The calendar again lists Storytime with Miss Natalie at the Owosso Public Library at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The desk asked the library on Sept. 10 whether that should read 10:30 a.m. The library has not answered, and the listing has not changed.

Twenty-five county school games are on the schedule Monday through Thursday, all volleyball and soccer. Owosso plays at Corunna in volleyball Wednesday, Durand plays at Chesaning in soccer Tuesday and Ovid-Elsie hosts Durand in volleyball the same night. Thursday brings New Lothrop at Ovid-Elsie and Clio at Ovid-Elsie in volleyball, Ovid-Elsie at Durand and Chesaning at Lakeville in soccer. As with every week this fall, the verified schedules carry no start times — that gap has been open since Sept. 10 and the athletic directors owe it.
