Five county boards meet Monday; Owosso at Corunna football Friday

Monday is the crowded night. Five public boards in Shiawassee County meet the same evening u2014 Owosso City Council, Corunna Public Schools, Durand City Council, New Lothrop Schools and Ovid-Elsie Schools u2014 and at least three of them have items in front of them that residents have been asking about.

In Owosso, the council takes up a proposed ban on camping on city property, which The Current reported is on Monday's agenda. Corunna's school board opens a debate on its cell phone policy. Durand's council has the Amtrak depot lease and a repair at the Vinewood lift station. New Lothrop's board has the 2025-26 audit and a bid for baseball field drainage. Ovid-Elsie's board, by its posted agenda, has one action item: a closed session on a legal opinion.

Corunna City Council also meets Monday, in the lower level of the Community Center, with a public hearing on the city's fire special assessment. As we reported last week, the cost per parcel was not included in the council packet, so the number is something residents will have to hear at the hearing itself.

Also Monday: the county health department office in Corunna reopens with Environmental Health Director Elliott back at work. That matters because The Current's questions about a reported raw sewage discharge u2014 whether it was checked, whether anyone was warned u2014 were routed into a FOIA request the department said it could not process until his return. That thread is still open.

Around town

The Children's Library at Owosso Public Library runs "Let's Make Pocket Pets" at 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday, with Storytime with Miss Natalie at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and a 3-D pumpkins craft at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Friends of the Owosso Library meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the library meeting room, and author Elizabeth Wehman gives a talk and book signing at 4 p.m. Thursday in the adult library. Downtown Owosso holds Volunteer Signup Week beginning Monday. At the SCOA Owosso Center, a SMARTS art class runs 10 a.m. Tuesday (RSVP required) and a funeral planning session with Christina at 3 p.m. Wednesday. In Durand, the Memorial Library has Play and Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and opens the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale on Thursday.

Games

Twenty-five county games are on the schedule, and the one most people will drive to is Friday: Owosso at Corunna football. Before that, Kearsley at Owosso and Clare at Ovid-Elsie play soccer Monday, with Genesee at Perry in volleyball. Tuesday is the heaviest night, with nine games including Ovid-Elsie at Chesaning soccer and New Lothrop at Mt. Morris volleyball. Wednesday brings Lake Fenton at Corunna and Goodrich at Owosso volleyball; Thursday has six games, among them More Academy at Corunna soccer. The dossier does not list start times for any of them.

Two other things on the calendar: M-52 near Perry closes for one hour on Sept. 25 u2014 one hour, not the full week, as we corrected last week u2014 and the Owosso Nationals CRA 100 goes green at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Owosso Speedway in Ovid. The speedway's Destruction Overload has been moved to Oct. 3.
