Owosso council takes up $116,107 in cleanup bills Tuesday

The most expensive item on this week's public calendar sits in front of the Owosso City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 8: the city is moving to bill three property owners $116,107 for cleanups it paid for on their parcels. The Current reported on that item last week. If the council signs off, the cost follows the property.

Corunna's council meets the same night, and the Ovid-Elsie school board meets Wednesday, Sept. 9. Those are the three public meetings on the verified county calendar this week; agendas are posted in advance and residents can attend.

Older adults should note the SCOA Owosso Center is closed Monday for the holiday. It reopens Tuesday with a SMARTS art class at 10 a.m. — RSVP required — and a site committee meeting at 10:30 a.m. In Morrice, the SCOA Morrice Center offers free hearing checks at 2 p.m. Friday.

The libraries carry most of the week's programming. Durand Memorial Library, which was closed Saturday, Sept. 5 for the Labor Day weekend, has Play and Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, a Fall Craft Day for all ages at 2 p.m. Friday and a family movie night, "Hocus Pocus," at 6 p.m. Friday in its main room. At Owosso Public Library, the children's library has Tween Game Day at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Tween Game Night at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Fall Smells Playdough at 11 a.m. Saturday and Storytime with Miss Natalie on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The calendar lists those storytimes at 10:30 p.m., which appears to be an error for 10:30 a.m.; the desk has not confirmed the correct time.

For adults, the Zonta Club of Owosso and SDL present "Genealogy: Finding Your Roots" at 4 p.m. Thursday in the adult library at Owosso Public Library. The Downtown Owosso Farmers Market opens at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Twenty-five school games are on the schedule. Tuesday brings two county volleyball matchups — Durand at Byron and Ovid-Elsie at New Lothrop — plus Montrose at Chesaning volleyball, Morrice at Atherton volleyball, and soccer with Chesaning at Birch Run, Lakeville at Ovid-Elsie and Montrose at Durand. Wednesday: Corunna at Clio and Lake Fenton at Owosso volleyball, Laingsburg at Portland St. Patrick, Saranac at Perry, and Birch Run at Ovid-Elsie soccer. Thursday: Durand at Lakeville and Laingsburg at Perry soccer, Beecher at Morrice volleyball.

Friday is a seven-game football night, and the one that stays in the county is Chesaning at Durand — Durand comes in off a 29-14 loss at New Lothrop, which The Current reported. Also Friday: Owosso at Lake Fenton, Corunna at Clio, Perry at Pewamo-Westphalia, Ovid-Elsie at LakeVille Memorial, Laingsburg at Fowler and New Lothrop at Montrose. Byron hosts Deckerville on Saturday, when Laingsburg also plays volleyball at Williamston and soccer at Kettering. The verified schedules do not list start times for any of the games.
