Owosso Nationals in Ovid, Owosso at Corunna lead county weekend
Two nights of racing at Owosso Speedway, eight football games Friday and a Ball Street market fill the Sept. 25-27 weekend across Shiawassee County.
The Owosso Nationals runs Friday and Saturday at Owosso Speedway, the track at 7204 W. M-21 outside Ovid. It is the weekend's largest draw, and it lands on the same Friday night as eight county football games — including Owosso at Corunna.
The Current reported earlier this week that camping at the speedway was filling fast and that gates open at noon Friday. The track has not posted an entry list, so who is racing on either night is not yet public. If you are planning around it, M-21 traffic west of Ovid is the thing to watch.
Friday starts much quieter downtown. The Children's Library at Owosso Public Library has a craft program, "Let's Make Pocket Pets," at 9 a.m., followed by Storytime with Miss Natalie at 10:30 a.m. At 4:30 p.m., the SCOA Durand Center serves its birthday cake — the senior center's monthly standing date.
From 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, the Now & Wow Market sets up on Ball Street between West Mason and Main in Owosso, a seven-hour run that carries well past dinner.
Friday night is the fullest football slate the county has had in weeks. Along with Owosso at Corunna, it is Birch Run at Chesaning, Durand at Ovid-Elsie, Bath at Perry, Mayville at Byron, Laingsburg at Pewamo-Westphalia, Mt. Morris at New Lothrop and Fulton at Morrice. Kickoff times were not included in the verified schedules we received; we have an open request out on start times and will post them as they come in. Saturday, the Downtown Owosso Farmers Market opens at 9 a.m. in its usual downtown spot. The Children's Library follows at 11 a.m. with "Make Your Own Potion Bottles." Racing resumes at Owosso Speedway for the second night of the Owosso Nationals. Durand's volleyball team travels to Stockbridge.
Sunday has nothing on the community calendar.
