Woodhull Township mails ambulance assessment notices; hearings Oct. 7

If you own property in Woodhull Township, a postcard about the ambulance assessment should be in your mailbox this week. Supervisor Daunt told the township board on Sept. 2 that he had prepared the mailing and materials, and that the two public hearings on the assessment will be held at 6 and 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 7, according to the proposed minutes posted by the township.

The Current reported in August that the board scheduled those October hearings at its Aug. 12 meeting, along with a 5-0 vote on the LSW fire and ambulance budget. The Sept. 2 minutes do not state the assessment rate or what each of the two hearings covers. The board meets at the township hall at 7315 W. Beard Road.

The other item with a long tail: Rolling Hills. The minutes record under planning commission that the project has the recommendation of the township planning commission, the township board and the county planning commission, and "is now being reviewed by the County Board of Commissioners for approval or further recommendations that need to be addressed." The Current reported the board backed the planned unit development 5-0 on Aug. 12; the proposal from E.T. Mackenzie Company has also moved as conditional rezoning request CPREZ26-001.

Ryan Slamka of Maner Costerisan presented the audit for the 2025-26 fiscal year at the start of the meeting, covering opinions and the split between management's responsibilities and the auditor's. The minutes summarize the presentation this way: "All and all Woodhull Twp is in very good financial status." Treasurer Warfle reported $1,208,059.93 on hand, including former ARPA money in stationary accounts and $779,854.15 in operating funds.

The board approved $34,350.69 in bills, including EFTs and payroll, on a 5-0 roll call — Trustee Ryan, Treasurer Warfle, Trustee Turner, Supervisor Daunt and Clerk Maize all voting yes. Turner moved, Warfle supported. Clerk Maize reported check numbers 28864 through 28886 were used.

The township's parking lot is getting priced out. One quote came in at $800 to paint new lines, but board members raised the condition of the lot itself, and Ryan moved, supported by Warfle, to have the supervisor seek bids for repaving with the striping included. All ayes, no nays.

Also from the meeting: the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership asked the township to become a paying partner at $1 per resident, or $3,687; Daunt said the township will look at it at next year's budget time. Daunt bought solar-powered rope lights for the handicap ramp on the east side of the building, which the minutes say should help with lighting during elections. Maize said the Nov. 3 general election is "in full swing" and the election committee has approved the absentee voter counting board. The fire and ambulance report listed 466 EMS calls and 246 fire calls year to date through July, and said the new ambulance is back in service after a wrong bumper was shipped; a shop repaired the damaged one so the state inspection could be completed. What happens next: The two ambulance assessment hearings are set for 6 and 6:15 p.m. Oct. 7. Bids for repaving and striping the township hall parking lot go to the supervisor, with no return date given in the minutes. The Rolling Hills decision now sits with the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners. These are proposed minutes and are subject to board approval at the next meeting.
