Ovid-Elsie board weighed district restructuring at Aug. 5 work session
The agenda for the Ovid-Elsie Area Schools board work session listed enrollment projections and a possible restructuring concept, with no formal action to be taken.
The Ovid-Elsie Area Schools Board of Education held a work session Wednesday, Aug. 5, in the high school student lounge to review enrollment projection data and discuss what the agenda called a "potential district restructuring possibility."
The meeting was scheduled for 4 p.m. The agenda stated the purpose of the workshop twice: to review enrollment projections and discuss restructuring, and to remind attendees that "no formal Board action will be taken."
Under district enrollment projections, the agenda listed a single item: the Michigan Alliance Enrollment Projection Summary.
The restructuring discussion item laid out three reasons the district is exploring the idea — enrollment changes, financial sustainability and efficient use of facilities. The agenda then called for a review of "a potential restructuring concept" covering elementary grade configuration, middle and high school grade alignment, and future use of district facilities.
The agenda also listed potential benefits and challenges, along with operational considerations including transportation, staffing, student transitions and programming opportunities.
A board discussion section followed, listing initial board thoughts and questions, information board members would like gathered, topics requiring additional analysis, and community engagement considerations.
The agenda included time for public comment under Board Policy 0167.3, which states that the board "recognizes the value of public comment on educational issues and the importance of allowing members of the public to express themselves on District matters." A note at the bottom of the agenda said the session was a meeting of the board in public to conduct district business "and is not to be considered a public community meeting."
What happens next
Because the work session was structured so that no formal board action would be taken, any restructuring decision would require action at a future meeting. The agenda set aside time for board members to name information they want gathered and topics requiring additional analysis, along with community engagement considerations.
