Corunna 36, Chesaning 30; seven county football finals still out
Corunna held off Chesaning by six in the only county-vs-county game on Friday's card, while results from seven other Shiawassee County football games had not reached the score desk.
Corunna beat Chesaning 36-30 on Friday night, a six-point finish in the only game on the Oct. 23 card that put two Shiawassee County teams on the same field. Chesaning traveled to Corunna. The score is confirmed by our score desk.
That is one of two county finals in hand from Friday. The other, which The Current reported late Friday night, was New Lothrop's 55-54 loss to Cheboygan — a one-point game that remains the closest county result logged on the night.
Everything else from the county's Friday slate is still outstanding. Our score desk had no final at deadline for Essexville Garber at Owosso, Bath at Durand, Perry at Vandercook Lake, Ovid-Elsie at Imlay City, Byron at Marlette, Carson City-Crystal at Laingsburg or Bad Axe at Morrice. We are not publishing a score for any of those games until a school or the score desk confirms one.
The Byron result matters beyond one night. The Eagles' verified nine-game 8-player schedule, which The Current published in August, listed Marlette on Oct. 23 as the last line of the season. Until that final arrives, Byron's season record is unsettled in our logs.
A note on what we have and what we don't: the dossier behind this roundup carries scores, not play-by-play. We have not logged how the Corunna-Chesaning game turned, who scored, or either team's record, and we will not infer them. The same goes for playoff implications — nothing in the verified data speaks to them.
The desk is also still missing a stack of earlier results: three Oct. 16 football games (Laingsburg at Michigan Lutheran Seminary, New Lothrop at LakeVille Memorial and Montabella at Morrice), the Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 games, and every county volleyball final from the Oct. 13, Oct. 14, Oct. 20 and Oct. 22 slates, including Chesaning at Byron and the three Thursday matches at Morrice, Calvary Baptist Academy and Mt. Morris.
What happens next: Schools and the score desk owe the seven missing football finals. As they come in, they post to our live scoreboard at /scoreboard/, which updates through the night, and we will carry the county totals forward here.
