Owosso Speedway starts championship nights Aug. 29 in Ovid
Points titles in Late Model Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Trucks and the wedge/dwarf class are on the line Saturday on the 3/8-mile asphalt oval, with gates at 4 p.m. and racing at 6.
The weekly classes at Owosso Speedway begin settling their season titles Saturday. The track's event page lists Night 1 of the Young Owosso Championship on Aug. 29, with racing for Alderman's Late Model Sportsman, Meyer Electric Pure Stocks, Michigan Paving Trucks and the DuroTech Mini Wedges on the 3/8-mile high-banked asphalt at 7204 W. M-21 in Ovid.
If you are going, the timing is the same shape as most Saturdays at the track. Pits open at noon, hot laps run at 1 p.m., the front gate opens at 4 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m. The event listing also carries a Dwarf Cars class alongside the four divisions named in the track's write-up.
What makes this one different from a regular weekly show is the points. The track describes Saturday as "the night the points really matter," the first of its championship nights. Standings for the weekly divisions are posted on the speedway's points page.
Saturday follows a heavy stretch on the M-21 oval. The Current reported that the track ran the Ron Hauser Memorial on Aug. 22 with a 100-lap Outlaw Super Late Model feature, and that the ASA STARS National Tour's Michigan 300 was scheduled for the evening of Aug. 26. We have not yet been able to report winners from either of those nights; the track had not posted results at the time of writing.
Looking ahead, the Owosso Nationals return in late September. The Current reported Aug. 26 that the track's event page lists Champion Racing Association cars plus Pure Stock, Modified and Outlaw Super Late Model classes for Day 2 of the Nationals on Sept. 26, without times, prices or an entry list posted yet.
Two things the event page does not say: ticket prices and how many laps each feature runs. The speedway lists general admission and pit passes for sale online and posts prices on its own fans page, but neither figure appears in the Aug. 29 listing. The listing also does not name a second championship night date.
What happens next: racing goes green at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, in Ovid. The desk is still chasing results from the Aug. 22 Ron Hauser Memorial and the Aug. 26 Michigan 300, plus the schedule for Championship Night 2 and Day 1 of the Owosso Nationals.
