Owosso Speedway sets 50-lap modified finale Sept. 12 in Ovid
The track's run-of-show for Championship Night 2 puts the modified feature at 50 laps, street stocks at 30 and the sport compact A main at 25, with mini wedges racing at noon and the front gate opening at 4 p.m.
Four points championships get settled Saturday on the asphalt at Owosso Speedway in Ovid, and the track has now posted how long each of them will take. The run-of-show for Young Owosso Championship Night 2, presented by Young Chevrolet, puts the modified feature at 50 laps, the street stock feature at 30, the sport compact A feature at 25 and a 15-lap sport compact B feature ahead of it. A 25-lap modified semi-feature is listed "if required."
Racing starts at 6 p.m. The front gate opens at 4 p.m., with tickets sold there or online through showpass.com/o/owosso-speedway. Drivers meet at 5:30 p.m. and opening ceremonies are at 5:45 p.m. Heat races are six laps each, run "as required," in sport compact, street stock and modified order.
The one thing worth planning around: the mini wedges — the fourth division with a title on the line — race at noon, four hours before the front gate opens. The pit gate opens at 11 a.m., fuel and tire sales start at 11:05 a.m., and the mini wedge drivers meeting is at 11:45 a.m. at the pit board, with racing at the start/finish line at noon.
The Current reported Aug. 26 that the mini wedges were pulled from the Aug. 29 Championship Night 1 card after the track said an early-season editing error had put the class in that event's description. At the time, the track described Sept. 12 as the only mini wedge race left on the calendar — though mini wedges are also listed on the Sept. 25 Owosso Nationals Day 1 card, and the track has not said which listing stands.
For the three full-size divisions, the afternoon is built around tech and qualifying. Open practice for street stock, sport compact and modified runs at 1 p.m. and again at 4 p.m., lined up by division. Sport compact tech is car to car in the pits starting at 1:05 p.m.; street stock tech begins at 2:50 p.m. at the tech barn and modified tech at 3:25 p.m. Group qualifying is 15 minutes per class beginning at 4:30 p.m. with street stocks, then sport compact at 4:45 and modified at 5 p.m. Cars "must qualify and race on teched tires," the schedule says.
Scanner listeners can find the RACEceiver on 454.00 and pit radio on 89.9 FM. The track lists the schedule as tentative and subject to change without notice.
What the posting does not include is who is in position to win any of it. The track has not published the points standings going into the night, and there is no entry list for the modified or street stock features. Ticket prices are not listed in the run-of-show. Owosso Speedway is at 7204 W. M-21 in Ovid.
What happens next: gates open at 11 a.m. Saturday for the pits and 4 p.m. for spectators, with mini wedges at noon and the rest of the program green at 6 p.m. Two weeks later the track closes its season with the two-night Owosso Nationals on Sept. 25 and 26.
