Bancroft's Ryan Cords wins truck feature at Owosso Speedway in Ovid

Ryan Cords of Bancroft started 14th in the 25-lap Truck Series feature at Owosso Speedway and finished first, according to results the track has posted for its Aug. 8 North South Shootout in Ovid.

Cords was also fastest in truck qualifying at 18.017 seconds and ran second in his heat. Brad Reseigh of Mt. Morris finished second in the feature and Mark Wilcox of Davison third. A second Bancroft entry, Russell Cords, came from 12th to finish fifth. Chris Devinney of Vernon started second and was one of two trucks listed as not finishing. Fifteen trucks were entered; three did not start the feature.

The headline race on the card, a 50-lap Late Model Sportsman feature billed by the track as a straight-up battle between the Alderman's Late Model Sportsman regulars and challengers from out of state, went to Dan Leeck of Birch Run from ninth on the grid. Hunter Jack of Auburn, Indiana, who had turned the fastest qualifying lap at 15.282 seconds, finished second, and Isaac Ross of Plymouth, Indiana, was third.

It was a rough 50 laps. Of the 24 cars listed in the Late Model Sportsman results, only nine were still running at the finish. Twelve were scored as did-not-finish, two did not start and Cole Marr of Linden was disqualified. Among the county's drivers, Owosso's Bo Smith moved up from 13th to sixth, and Steven Pelky II of Durand was scored 20th, out of the race. The Current reported Aug. 26 that Smith also ran third in Late Model Sportsman at the Ron Hauser Memorial card on Aug. 22.

In the Pure Stock feature, Lonnie Saumier of Davison won from 12th and Kyle Callahan of Midland came from 14th to second. Jason Spencer of Owosso, who qualified second, finished third. Fourteen pure stocks were entered.

What happens next: Championship Night 1 runs Saturday, Aug. 29, in Ovid, with the front gate at 4 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m. As The Current reported this week, the run-of-show puts a 40-lap Late Model Sportsman feature at the center of the card, with 25-lap truck and pure stock features and a 20-lap dwarf car race, and season points titles on the line in Late Model Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Trucks and the dwarf class. The track has not posted purses or general admission and pit pass prices for Saturday.
