Chad Finley wins Ron Hauser Memorial 100 at Owosso Speedway in Ovid

Chad Finley of St. Johns won the 100-lap Outlaw Super Late Model feature at Owosso Speedway on Saturday night, taking the Ron Hauser Memorial after starting eighth in the 21-car field. Results posted on the track's event page show he gained seven spots to get there.

Jake Sheridan of Mount Brydges, Ontario, finished second from the outside of the front row. Steve Needles of Berrien Springs was third, Chase Rosebrugh of West Branch fourth and Blake Childers of Flint fifth. Casey Roderick of Lawrenceville, Georgia, a regular on the national Super Late Model circuit, qualified fifth on the grid and came home eighth.

It was a rough 100 laps. Eight of the 21 starters were scored as not finishing, including Owosso's Jason Felver, who started fourth and was listed 19th. Conner Zbozien of St. Clair Shores led the field to the green from the pole and finished 11th. James Smith, listed by the track as being from "Owasso, MI," was 13th.

In the 50-lap Alderman's Late Model Sportsman feature, Joe Hodgeson Jr. of Davison came from seventh to win, ahead of Brent Jack of Auburn, Indiana. Bo Smith of Owosso finished third from the fifth starting spot. Hunter Jack was fastest in qualifying at 15.227 seconds but was scored 10th and did not finish. Ten cars entered the class.

The Applebee's Oil and Propane Sport Compacts drew 31 entries, the biggest count of the night, and produced the night's longest charge: Matthew Elsey Jr. of Otsego started 20th in the A feature and won it, passing 19 cars. Dalton Irish of Birch Run was second and Matt Elsey Sr. third. Joshua Harmon of Owosso finished sixth, Elsie's Dustin Workman 14th, Elsie's Lily Kelley 16th and Owosso's Connor Jones 17th. Madison Orta of Ovid won the B feature from 10th. The posted results show one disqualification in the A feature and six in the B feature, including Ovid's Kaden Huss and Owosso's Josh Shiver; the track's results page does not give a reason for any of them.

The Current reported on Aug. 20 that the memorial was built around the 100-lap Outlaw Super Late Model feature, with gates at 4 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m. The track's own event listing describes the race as honoring a past Owosso Speedway promoter, on what it calls a 3/8-mile high-banked asphalt oval that has been racing since 1939.

What happens next: the speedway's Championship Night 1 is Saturday, Aug. 29, with points titles in Late Model Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Trucks and the wedge/dwarf class on the line, gates at 4 p.m. and racing at 6. The two-night Owosso Nationals follows Sept. 25-26. The track has not posted a purse breakdown or lap-by-lap detail for the Hauser Memorial, and has not explained Saturday's disqualifications; we have asked and will report what the track says.
