Corunna at Durand leads six football openers across the county

High school football is back Thursday night, and the one game that pits two county programs against each other is Corunna at Durand, kicking off at 7 p.m. in Durand. It is the season opener for both the Cavaliers and the Railroaders, and it is the game most likely to fill a set of bleachers on a Thursday in August.

Corunna's trip to Durand is the first date on an eight-game schedule that The Current published on Aug. 10, one that gives the Cavaliers five home dates and three in-county matchups before the year is out.

Five more county football teams open at the same time. Standish-Sterling is at Chesaning at 7 p.m., Tri County Area is at Ovid-Elsie at 7 p.m. in Elsie, Vandercook Lake is at Laingsburg at 7 p.m., and Muskegon Catholic Central is at New Lothrop at 7 p.m. Perry is on the road at Addison, also at 7 p.m.

Morrice starts earliest of anyone. The 8-player Murauders — correction, the Morrice 8-player team — open on the road at Brown City with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff, the first of nine games on a schedule that brings five of them home.

It is not only football. Perry hosts Potterville in soccer at 5:30 p.m., the earliest start on the county board. Durand plays soccer at Swartz Creek at 6:30 p.m., and Byron hosts Potterville in volleyball at 6:30 p.m., also at 6:30.
