Durand at New Lothrop, both 1-0, tops 14 county games tonight
Two unbeaten county football teams meet in New Lothrop at 7 p.m., part of a 14-game Thursday that also sends Owosso, Corunna, Chesaning, Ovid-Elsie, Laingsburg, Byron, Perry and Morrice out on the field.
The night's game to circle is in New Lothrop, where Durand visits at 7 p.m. with both teams at 1-0. It is the second county-vs-county football meeting of the young season, and neither side has lost yet: Durand got there with a 14-13 win over Corunna in the county opener, as The Current reported, and New Lothrop opened with a 54-0 result.
That is one of 14 games involving county teams on Thursday, Sept. 3 — nine football games, three volleyball matches and two soccer games.
Two more of them are county-against-county on the volleyball court. Chesaning plays at Durand at 6:45 p.m., with both teams 1-0. Byron plays at Ovid-Elsie at 7 p.m., where the host Marauders are 0-1.
The rest of the football slate runs at 7 p.m. Fowlerville is at Corunna, the only home football game in the county besides New Lothrop and Morrice; the Cavaliers are 0-1 after the one-point loss at Durand. LakeVille Memorial is at Chesaning (1-0). Merrill is at Morrice (1-0). On the road, Owosso is at Flint Hamady, carrying an 0-1 record after its 42-20 loss at Pinckney; Ovid-Elsie is at Birch Run (0-1); Laingsburg is at Kelloggsville (0-1); and Byron is at Burton Bentley. Perry starts earliest of the football teams, at 6 p.m. at Detroit Osborn, at 1-0.
The evening opens at 5 p.m. with volleyball, Lake Fenton at New Lothrop (1-0). Soccer follows at 5:30 — Durand at More Academy (1-0) and Owosso at Stockbridge (0-1).
One gap in the records above: Byron's football team has no won-lost mark listed, because the final from its Aug. 28 home opener against Mesick has still not been confirmed to this desk. It is part of a backlog of unreported finals going back to opening week, including three games Aug. 31, four Sept. 1 and eight Wednesday, Sept. 2 — among them the four-team volleyball quad Ovid-Elsie hosted in Elsie.
